The Delta 14-651 bench mortiser is key for woodworking, cabinetry, furniture and boat building. The 1/2 HP motor and 3/8-inch capacity chuck mortises hard and soft woods. It has four chisels and bits (1/4-inch x 1/4-inch; 5/16-inch x 5/16-inch; 3/8-inch x 3/8-inch; 1/2-inch x 1/2-inch). A cast iron base, adjustable fence and head ease adjustments between projects. 9 3/8-inches under head to base with a 5-inch stroke accepts multiple sizes assemblies and stock. The head can be turned 180 degrees and re-mounted for off-table mortising; the height attachment adds 1-3/4-inch under the head delivering excellent versatility in the shop. An adjustable stop makes repeat mortises easier. The tool comes with chuck key/hex wrench for bit/chisel changes.

Powermatic 1791310 PM701 3/4 Horsepower Bench Mortiser
The Powermatic Model 701 benchtop deluxe mortiser is powered by a 3/4-horsepower, 115-volt motor that runs at 1725 rpm and has a chuck capacity of 1/2-inch. The head-stroke capacity is 5-1/2-inches and the chisel center to fence is 4-3/8-inch with a chisel capacity up to 3/4-inch. There is an in line depth stop whichallows you to stop at pre-set depths without racking the drill bit to the base. The heavy-duty handle is reversible and can be changed from one side to the other and does not require any special tools, great for the left handed woodworkers out there. The stock hold down features a double lock system to eliminate any slippage when removing the chisel from the work-piece. The fence has a quick action cam lock to make positioning simple. For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one).
